Zofia Rydet
May 5, 1911 – August 24, 1997
was a Polish photographer, best known for her project “Sociological Record”, which aimed to every household in Poland.
The photographs are predominantly portraits of children, men, women, couples, families and the elderly amidst their belongings.

Rydet began working on “Sociological Record” in 1978 at the age of 67, and took nearly 20,000 pictures until her death in 1997. Many of the pictures remain undeveloped.
Rydet had already reached an advanced age—the concept for the Sociological Record came into focus when Rydet was 67—when she began to work on what would become her magnum opus: the Sociological Record, a sweepingly comprehensive photographic “portrait” of Polish domestic life that would come to span decades, regions, and even countries. And yet for all of its epic scope and panoramic comprehensiveness, the Record is comprised of portraits that often feel as intimate (and sometimes as endearingly awkward) as those carried within a locket worn around the neck, or else to be found stored in shoeboxes hibernating atop wardrobes and at the backs of closets. x
