Women Artists of the Republic of Georgia

Today, on the 26th of May, as the Republic of Georgia celebrates the Independence Day “Art by Women – Women in Arts” invites you to celebrate Georgian Women Artists.

Independence Day is an annual public holiday in Georgia observed on 26 May

It commemorates the 26 May 1918 adoption of the Act of Independence, which established the Democratic Republic of Georgia in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution of 1917.

Ketevan (Maghalashvili) Magalashvili 

Ketevan Konstantines asuli Magalashvili (Georgian: ქეთევან კონსტანტინესასული მაღალაშვილი; 19 April 1894 – 30 May 1973) was a Georgian and Soviet painter and art conservator. via Wikipedia

A native of Kutaisi, Magalashvili began her studies at the School of the Caucasian Society of Fine Arts, moving to Moscow in 1915 to study at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
She returned to Georgia in 1917; in 1921 she began working at the library of the National Gallery in Tbilisi.
She traveled to Paris in 1923, enrolling at the Académie Colarossi and remaining there until 1926. In Paris she was studying contemporary French art and developing her technique. Returning once again to Georgia, she became a conservator at the National Gallery. She continued work as a painter, exhibiting with the Union of Artists for much of her career and gaining some notice for her portraits. She died in Tbilisi. via Wikipedia (edited)

Thamar de Létay-Vachnadze (1925-2001)

Thamar de Létay-Vachnadze served as the Artistic Director of the Sao Paulo Theater and held a prominent position within the creative elite of Paris. Her departure from Georgia was precipitated by the Soviet occupation, prompting her initial relocation to France before subsequently pursuing her artistic endeavors in Brazil.
